Vulture Restaurants have become an important tool in the conservational arsenal. Without many of these safe feeding stations vultures would without doubt be in even worse trouble. This is a great way to see vultures in quite high number and relatively close. The cost of these hides is normally more on a level of a nominal donation considering the amazing spectacle they offer.
If you are anywhere near a vulture restaurant I can’t recommend going highly enough. The Kempenfeldt Vulture Hide, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa is a particular favourite you can even stay overnight in it. Shaped like a cave and fitted with a large window and flap for your camera lens it offers a good number of vultures that are close to the hide.
One word of warning and please don’t let this put you off but there can be a bit of a smell that if you aren’t expecting it can catch you a little off guard.
I took 3 very non-vulture oriented people to this hide while on a safari holiday. Before we visited the vulture restaurant they were extremely sceptical about the whole thing. By the time we left they had all agreed that this was by far the best experience of the holiday. Is is an absolute must for anyone lucky enough to visit Africa.
